Paintings and their Symbolism

This interesting course should open up many avenues of meaning and understanding in art history. "Iconography, the science of identification, description, classification, and interpretation of symbols, themes and subject matter in the visual arts. The term can also refer to the artist's use of imagery in a particular work." We will look at a variety of paintings and sources and enjoy discovering meaning in paintings.

Course aim

This course talks about the language of symbolism in paintings which gives meaning to the paintings. We will talk about conventional symbols that are an interesting subject in the History of Art.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Interpret a variety of symbols in painting and the visual arts
  • Adapt the knowledge of the meaning of a symbol in one object and to recognise this meaning in other works of art.
  • Identify different eras of art
  • Recognise that different times in the history of art use different forms of symbolism

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • please bring pad and paper to make notes

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • I always encourage interest in your subject You may find something that particularly interests you
