Those Were the Days

Ref: C3673296

This will be a continuation of last term's work, with the intention to involve new students as well. There is already a strong sense of welcome and openness amongst the group and any newcomers will quickly feel part of the group. Overall, the course will be an opportunity to reminisce about days gone by, from school days, to starting work, from factories to home life and everything else. This is your chance to tell your story and to hear those of others. We will explore the possibility of creating a more permanent record as we go along.

Course aim

To create a supportive forum within which individual members can share their stories, find common ground and also strengthen their self-cpnfidence and pride in their lives.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for students who attend a specific centre only. For more information please call 0300 303 3464
  • This course is for anyone, irrespective of age, experience, gender, health or physical circumstances.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • talk with greater confidence to others about my personal stories
  • work collaboratively with others in the group
  • participate in the development of a group project
  • be aware of the benefits to be derived from participating in the group.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Students will be encouraged to bring in materials from home to aid and stimulate class discussion. If this is not possible, students will in no way be disadvantaged.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • The group will always be run in a way that meets the needs and interests of the individual students. The content and direction of our discussions will reflect the interests of the group, rather than being pre-determined by the tutor.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • WE will be looking at producing a more permanent record of our discussions
