This course is ideal for those wishing to develop their artistic style through the exploration of modern and contemporary painting practices. We will look at how to create various works of art using a range of media in relation to artists throughout history and around the world. Students can look forward to learning in a relaxed and welcoming environment and engaging in discussion and creation of works, as well as practical demonstrations and tailored learning.

Course aim

The aim of this course is to explore contemporary painting practice in order to develop artistic style and generate confidence in painting using various techniques and media.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary painting practice in order to achieve finished works of art
  • Create works of art that demonstrate knowledge of various painting techniques and media
  • Show a level of creativity and development of artistic style
  • Engage in discussion with other group members in relation to artistic practice

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Individual practice and creation of artistic works

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It is recommended that you provide your own painting supports such as canvases and boards to paint on, as well as any other preferred materials, i.e. brushes

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
