Latin for Pleasure

Ref: C3673234

Come and learn Latin in a friendly, supportive and stimulating group. We shall translate a wide range of extracts from Latin literature aimed to give students the skills to become independent readers of Latin. Much of the Latin will be adapted from the original to make it accessible to students but shorter extracts of unadapted Latin will also be given. Each week some aspect of grammar and syntax will be explained and practised. All students will have plenty of opportunities to translate, discuss and benefit from the wide range of insights provided by all the members of the class. Wherever possible we will consider the impact of Latin literature on modern European society and culture and its links to modern debates.

Course aim

To promote enjoyment of reading classical Latin literature and to enable students to become independent readers of Latin

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is aimed at students who have learnt the basics of Latin but welcomes students with a wide range of levels and will provide plentiful support for those whose Latin is very rusty or at an early stage. It is not suitable for beginners.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use a core vocabulary (slightly bigger than that required for GCSE Latin) of about 500 words
  • Show progress in a topic of Latin grammar to be chosen by the class
  • Use previously learnt basics of Latin more confidently and accurately.
  • Feel more confident in tackling extended passages of adapted Latin for translation.
  • Feel more confident in tackling extended passages of unadapted Latin translation

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • You will be given the option of submitting written work to the tutor which will be returned with written feedback, usually within a week.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It is desirable - but not essential - that students have their own concise grammar and dictionary for reference. The tutor will be happy to advise on the choice.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • No preparation is essential though obviously revision of previously learnt Latin will increase students' confidence.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
