Passion for Collecting

Yorkshire's country houses contain a wealth of important collections. We shall consider how and why they were collected and look at how they are displayed. Many private collections end up in public museums and galleries and we will examine the issues of public ownership. There will be visits to local collections.

Course aim

To give students a working knowledge of the history of the collections housed in local country houses and an insight into the workings of museums and galleries

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the main reasons for collecting
  • Explain the problems in exhibiting collections
  • Describe the issues relating to public ownership of a private collection
  • Explain the significance of the Grand Tour to many country house collections

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
