This is a general sewing course of interest to beginners as well as more experienced sewers. As well as developing your general sewing skills, this course will also include information about and demonstrations of some mending and repairing skills such as patching, inserting new material and replacing old or broken zips. Each week the tutor will demonstrate and teach a particular topic related to the course. Topics covered will include; learning about basic sewing equipment, including how to thread and use a sewing machine, hand and machine sewing techniques such as basic/useful stitches, and basic sewing techniques such as seams, inserting zips, hems and finishing off. Your own notes and handouts from the course will make a useful reference for projects you complete yourself after the course.

Course aim

A course for everyone who is interested in sewing and would like to learn about and improve their sewing skill as they work under the guidance of the tutor.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand and follow health and safety considerations when using sewing machines and equipment.
  • Correctly thread and use a sewing machine including changing the needle.
  • Demonstrate increased confidence sewing with a sewing machine using appropriate machine stitches and sewing techniques.
  • Use a range of traditional hand sewing techniques and stitches.
  • Be able to perform some mending and repairing techniques including patching, repairing a seam or replacing a broken zip.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Some basic equipment will be provided and there is a range of sewing machines available for use. Students should bring their own fabric and patterns to work with. Notebooks & pens will be useful for taking notes during the course.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
