The course will study a variety of articles from the course book and other relevant sources in order to develop an understanding of the French language, culture and its people whilst encouraging the use of the language through a range of communicative activities and exercises.

Course aim

To develop the learners' ability to a higher level with the emphasis on speaking and understanding skills using themed articles from the course book.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is intended for students who have been attending the previous levels of this progressive course or have a good understanding of the French language to about GCSE/O level standard.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • have a better understanding and recognition of spoken French numbers and the French numbering system.
  • read and understand more fluently French weather forecasts together with a broader knowledge of French weather terminology.
  • ask politely for things
  • make travel arrangements and enquiries.
  • follow and give directions ( and plus to have an understanding of relevant grammar points ).

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Essential materials: 1 - The course book " Breakthrough French 3 " published by Palgrave Macmillan. 2 - The course grammar book " La Grammaire en Clair " published by Nelson.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • This course is progressive by design and therefore constant reading and revision of previously studied themes and grammar content is highly recommended.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation

  • At the end of this period of study it is recommended that students give some consideration to continuing on to the next level due to its progressive design.
