Introduction to Sewing

Whether you want to brush up on your sewing skills or start from scratch, get creative with this group and work on a series of projects using both hand and machine sewing. You will be taught some sewing techniques and learn how to use a sewing machine confidently. You will also be able cut out a pattern and make a household item to take home.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to sewing and learn some new sewing techniques as well as use a sewing machine. The main aim for this course is to get the first foundation for independently making patterns both by hand and machine sewing.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • You will learn to hand sew.
  • You will learn to use a sewing machine confidently.
  • You will place a pattern on fabric and cut it out confidently.
  • You will learn and carry out some basic sewing techniques.
  • You will make a household item to take home.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation

  • The techniques and skills gained in this course can be used for further sewing projects and for any repairs or adjustments to clothes.
