Free Art Taster: Pets in pastels

'Pets in Pastels' will be an introduction to oil and chalk pastel techniques. Students will practise colour mixing and texture, with regard to a range of animals, and build skills of line, tone and composition. Inspiration will be gained from contemporary and art historical pastel artists.

Course aim

'Pets in Pastels' will be a workshop day enabling students to gain a mastery of chalk and oil pastels, and develop skills of line, tone, composition, colour mixing and texture in order to draw a favourite animal.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Develop chalk and oil pastel techniques
  • Make a convincing composition
  • Understand colour mixing with pastels
  • Create textures for animal fur
  • Create a pastel sketch of my chosen animal inspired by the work of others

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring: chalk and/or oil pastels, cartridge and/or pastel paper, fixative (can be hairspray) and a photo of a chosen animal (may be on phone or tablet).

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
