Free Art Taster: Abstracts in Acrylics

Abstracts with Acrylics will be an informative and experimental workshop day. Students will gain art history knowledge about the beginnings of abstract art, and begin making their own experiments in colour and textures. In so doing we will also learn about colour mixing, colour theory, and the layering possibilities of acrylic paint, using a brush and palette knife.

Course aim

Abstracts with Acrylics will enable students to learn about the principles behind abstract art and make their own experimental art works in acrylic paint.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Learn about the history of abstract art.
  • Develop skills of colour mixing with acrylic paint.
  • Develop skills of layering paint with a brush and palette knife.
  • Make a range of textures with acrylic paint.
  • Develop a unique personal abstract art work in acrylic paint, inspired by the work of others.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a set of acrylic paints, jam jar, brushes, palette knife and 'stay wet palette' plus heavy cartridge paper.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
