This course will provide an introduction to Digital which will give you the confidence to use computer and online tools including video conferencing. We will look at the basic features of devices and how sharing and protecting personal information works. You will be able to use applications and devices provided by your workplace and develop your digital confidence to a great extent. We will check your current digital skills and give you a clear support and guidance on where to start and how to improve your digital knowledge.

Course aim

This course is designed to introduce you to online learning and allow you to develop your effective use of computers and other devices. It will help you get ready to move onto an accredited course or feel more confident in your everyday work.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • Students need basic digital confidence. Support can be provided when needed.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use Canvas and Zoom independently to support my learning.
  • Describe my short and long term learning goals.
  • Set up and confidently use devices and applications needed in your work, learning or to pursue your own interests
  • Independently troubleshoot common problems encountered with the devices that you use
  • Develop personal safety routines to protect your personal information

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Students will be assessed against their ability to undertake specific digital tasks and focus given to learning these skills as necessary

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Ongoing assessment will inform whether the student can move on or whether further digital study is required to get to this level and support will be given at this stage

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You may also want to bring a notebook, pen and glasses if you need them.
