Gaining Confidence Through Walking and Exploring the Landscape

The planning and mapping of 15 walks which are then undertaken and led by the learners. The course will span over 15 sessions, commencing with an introduction to map reading and planning a route, with a short walk on the first session. Further sessions will be split into planning and then walking the route. The course has pick up points in Banwell, Weston-super-Mare, Worle, Congresbury, Yatton and Clevedon where the planning takes place. The group will then be taken to the start of the walk and the walks will be circular from there. The group will have the opportunity to use many of the footpaths in the surrounding area including the West Mendip Way. The paths are on the edge of the Mendips so include inclines, declines, wooded areas, fields with livestock, footpaths, bridleways and lanes.

Course aim

To develop team working and self esteem through walking and orienteering in an environment that supports personal development and therapy.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Aimed at those who are isolated or mental health issues. Willingness and the ability to walk 3 miles on the first session with stops, and to walk up an incline and down a decline on rough terrain.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the principles behind basic map reading.
  • Follow a walking route from a map.
  • Orientate myself using a map and compass.
  • Feel some confidence in my ability to achieve given tasks.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Working in a group and in an environment where support within the team is high. Experiencing walking within the countryside or those who simply wish to increase their levels of fitness by regular walking.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment..

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Clothing suitable for a day outdoors including a hat, scarf, gloves. Walking boots or sturdy walking shoes, waterproof coat, waterproof leggings. Small rucksack to carry lunch. Packed lunch and drink - 1L water in hot weather.
