Introduction to British Sign Language

This short British Sign Language course, the third recognised language in England, has been developed to encourage anyone who wishes to learn this visual language, from complete beginners to having an understanding of the purpose of fingerspelling, the relevance of clear handshapes and practise basic everyday conversation. We will be looking at the alphabet, greetings, family, numbers, questions and calendar. We will be following the basis of Level One Signature curriculum.

Course aim

This Introductory course is for anyone who wishes to learn this visual language, from complete novice to having an understanding of the purpose of fingerspelling, the relevance of clear handshapes and have basic conversation.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand and practise the British Alphabet.
  • Learn vocabulary around some topics, for example, everyday greetings.
  • To develop a new visual language.
  • To understand and develop handshapes used in signing.
  • Develop a language using subject, object, verb.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Please bring paper and pen to every lesson. This is to help you write down visual signs. Books are not required on this course.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • British Sign Language Level One is a natural progression from this course.
