Parent Champions

During the course you will be provided with information and underpinning knowledge relating to working/volunteering as a Parent Champion within a Child Centred setting. You will also have opportunities to learn and develop skills which will support you in your role as a Parent Champion. The course will include; activities which explore the types of roles and responsibilities of a Parent Champion, the benefits, and the ways in which you can support other Parent/Carers to gain awareness of engaging with and accessing provision and services within their local Child Centred setting.

Course aim

The course is an opportunity for you to learn and develop knowledge and useful skills relating to working/volunteering as a Parent Champion within a local community Child Centred setting.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the types of roles and responsibilities within a Child Centred setting.
  • Recognise how my own skills can contribute to being a Parent Champion.
  • Demonstrate ways to create engagement and inclusion within a Child Centred setting.
  • List possible types of barriers I may face as a Parent Champion and explore solutions for these.
  • Support the organising and implementing of a Parent Champion meeting.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
