ICT for Beginners and Improvers

Basic IT course covering a range of commonly used computer skills. Students will learn or improve internet search skills, use of email and how to stay safe online, as well as how to create a range of documents (i.e. letters, flyers, cards, spreadsheets and presentations). Exact topics to be decided as a group and there will be some time to focus on individual goals.

Course aim

Introduce learners to a range of essential computer skills including: using email, the internet, office software and G-suite to create various documents, photo editing and online safety.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. Use email to send and receive attachments and images.
  • 2. Use the internet to search for information and images.
  • 3. Use Microsoft Office or G-suite to create at least 3 different types of document.
  • 4. Upload and edit photos using simple image editing software.
  • 5. Use Google Slides to create a presentation about a hobby or interest to show to the group.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Your work and handouts will be saved to your google drive (online cloud storage) so you'll be able to access your work outside the class should you wish to continue working. You would need internet access to do this.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Laptops are provided to use in the class but students are are welcome to bring in their own devices if wished (i.e. laptop, tablet or smart phone).
