Introduction to British Sign Language

This short BSL session has been developed to take anyone who wishes to learn this visual language, from complete novice to having an understanding of the purpose of fingerspelling, the relevance of clear handshapes and learn basic everyday conversation.

Course aim

This course is an introduction to the fascinating world of communicating in British Sign Language. British Sign Language, being a visual language, is the third recognised language in Britain.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Learn to fingerspell using the British Alphabet.
  • Practise fingerspelling and develop receptive skills with names.
  • Have a basic conversation in BSL.
  • Recognised that BSL is a means of communicating, used by Deaf and those with having hearing impairment, using gestures, facial expression and body language.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • A 6 week beginners course is due to start on June 30th 2019.

  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2018
