Free Online Taster - Introduction to Feature Writing

Improve your understanding of what makes an interesting magazine article and how to generate ideas for publication in this free taster workshop. We will examine different types of feature and explore their essential ingredients with a view to you pitching your own idea. You will need use of a computer and be able to download and use free video conferencing software in order to participate in this course.

Additional information about this course

This course is a free taster delivered by Zoom (teleconference), students will need to have internet access with audio and preferably camera. Students will need to enrol by telephone 0300 303 3464 for the link to join the session and download free version of Zoom

Course aim

This free taster will provide an introduction to feature writing and to a longer WEA course.

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand what a journalistic feature is and what ingredients it comprises
  • Understand how to generate and form a feature idea
  • Gain an understanding of what a longer WEA introduction to feature writing course might include

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • As this is an online course, you will need use of a computer and be able to download and use free video conferencing software in order to participate in this course. Participants will also need pen and paper.
