Basic Sign Language

There will be opportunities to learn fingerspelling (or use it often if already learnt) and learn signs so one can communicate and hold a simple conversation with people in deaf community or with a deaf customer/staff/volunteer. We will cover greetings, food and drinks, weather, family and pets along with learning the British Sign Language grammar.

Course aim

This is a short course to learn some signs and to be able to have a simple basic conversation in sign language. We will also learn basic sign langauge grammar.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • do and use fingerspelling
  • learn and rememebr signs for greetings, food and drinks, weather, family and pets
  • learn and understand the basic British Sign Langauge grammar
  • hold a basic sign language conversation

How will I be taught?

  • In this course there will be time to put the signs into practice

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • The tutor will check on the signs and help. Also there will be a couple of practice sessions putting signing into use.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • you may wish to bring your own pen and paper to jot down notes/clues to help you to remember

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • If the students are interersted and want to learn more then there is a chance to go on an accredited course in the future.
