A 7-week course to help edit, structure and enhance your story, with guides to help progress key scenes, develop plot and improve tense, point of view and dialogue. You will receive constructive feedback to assist you to advance your novel towards completion.

Course aim

To help edit, structure and enhance your story, with guides to help progress key scenes, develop plot and improve tense, point of view and dialogue.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify and use correct POV & Tense.
  • Create character specific dialogue.
  • Demonstrate the use of 'Show' as opposed to 'Tell' in scenes.
  • Write effective Key Scenes.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Students will continue to write their novel and submit regular excerpts to receive feedback from the group.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Each week the students will complete a brief Personal Achievement form to state what they feel they have learnt/achieved. This will receive personalised feedback from the tutor.

What else do I need to know?

  • Students will need something to write with and something to write on. They may wish to keep a dedicated folder to store handouts and use throughout the course for their work.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Students on this course will hopefully write regularly and read books in their particular genre.
