Beginners Sign Language

This is a short course taking place at Kingshill House Arts Centre (Dursley) for the locals to be briefly deaf aware and to enjoy learning signs to help hold a basic conversation

Course aim

This is a 6 week course to receive basic deaf awareness and to mainly learn signs. By the end of the course, to be able to have or hold a basic conversation in sign language

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To be deaf aware
  • To do and use fingerspelling alphabet
  • To learn and remember the signs such as greetings, food, drinks, family, clothes and weather

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • There will be time on the course to put the signs into practice

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • The tutor will check the signs and help. Also there will be practice sessions putting signing into use

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • If the clients are interested and want to learn more then there is a chance to learn more with a follow on course.
