Helping your Child with Maths

Would you like to feel more confident to help your child with maths at home? Would you like to learn new English vocabulary to help you? This course will cover simple, fun maths activities to use at home with your child, and the English vocabulary and grammar to help you to do this with confidence, all in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Course aim

To build confidence and skills in helping your child with maths, whilst improving your own maths and literacy skills at the same time.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for parents (or potential parents) and carers who would like to help their child with maths at home whilst developing their English at the same time.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Learn a range of mathematical vocabulary necessary to support a child with more complex/ two step word problems
  • Learn a range of mathematical vocabulary necessary to support a child with measures and money
  • Learn a range of written methods to support a child with number
  • Learn to create a series of activities to use at home to support a child with measures and money

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • A pen and a notebook

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
