Skills for Schools

Ref: C3530270

Would you like to feel more confident to help your child to read in English? Would you like to feel more confident with phonics? Do you want to improve your own English at the same time? This 8 week course will cover story telling, using story sacks, developing knowledge of phonics, word attack skills and lots more. The class will be friendly and relaxed and we will also focus on improving your reading and speaking. If you are interested in volunteering as a reader in schools then this course will also help you to prepare for this, as well as other opportunities for involvement in school life.

Course aim

To continue to build confidence and skills in helping your child to read in English, whilst developing your own English skills at the same time.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for parents (or potential parents) and carers who have at least the basics of reading and who are not confident with current reading techniques used in schools.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use phonics to blend and segment a range of CCVC, CCVCC, CVVC words (using knowledge of vowel/ consonant digraphs and trigraphs)
  • Create and use a story sack for a children's picture book to extend learning opportunities
  • Develop questioning skills to support children to understand the meaning of what they read
  • Learn how a UK Primary School works and the opportunities available to become involved in school life

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A pen and a notebook
