Course aim

To offer an introduction to the characteristics of letterforms including tools and materials, which is a great style to learn for the beginner and more experienced. With a view to developing your own hand lettering.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Experience is not necessary. A keen interest to learn the styles and develop your own creativity is all that is required.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Gain knowledge in different types of letterforms
  • Select appropriate tools and materials for Hand Lettering
  • Construct letters in varying proportions
  • Identify the principles and produce balanced layouts

How will I be taught?

  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • I will monitor and assess students letter forms through a combination of exercises, activities and projects with worksheets and games to engage with.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Comfortable clothing a good pair of glasses (if needed). Materials: Fine-tip black pens, pencil, erasers, paper (layout, plain refill pads or printer paper) Tracing paper, ruler...Tools and materials will be available to buy if needed.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • The initial session will cover tools and materials which we will discuss including options and availabilty from local shops and websites.
