Course aim
To provide a brief introduction to early 20th century Modernist literature & become familiar with some of the artistic & cultural contexts of the period. To help develop confidence and understanding of a selection of challenging Modernist literature.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Read and discuss selected Modernist texts with understanding and confidence.
- Describe some of the contexts of Modernism and the changes taking place
- Evaluate the importance of Modernism in literary history
How will I be taught?
- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
What else do I need to know?
- Nothing else is needed
Pre-course work, reading and information sources
- No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
- Students may wish to dip into the work of authors such as Woolf, Joyce, Pound and Kafka. There are also some execellent introductions to Modernism such as; Introducing Modernism (ISBN 9781848311169 and the Cambridge Introduction to Modernism
