Learn about the demands that the War made on the local population, in terms of men, animals (especially) horses, and employment in the Factory and on the surrounding farms.

Course aim

This talk will describe the events in Tiverton during the First World War: it will include the effects of the conflict on the people of the town, but WILL NOT give a history of the War itself.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • understand the effects that the large conflict had on a local community
  • discover the personalities that 'steered' the town through the War
  • realise the numbers of men who went from each locality
  • learn about the effects the War had on schools
  • discover the extent of the expanding roles of women at the time

  • handouts for further reading and research

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • questions and discussion regarding the subject will be encouraged
