An Introduction to Ancient Egypt

This course will trace the emergence of dynastic Egypt, examine the development of the iconic Giza pyramids, journey through the cultural peak of the Middle Kingdom and then the Egypt of Tutankhamun and Ramesses the Great in the New Kingdom.

Course aim

This course aims to introduce the history, religion, monumental architecture and writings of the ancient Egyptians, to explore the fundamentals of their history and society and discover why their civilization was so successful.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the nature and importance of the relationship between the Egyptian civilization and its physical environment
  • List selected major periods and events in ancient Egyptian history
  • Discuss the possible construction process for the pyramids at Giza
  • Read together with a sign list a king’s name in a cartouche

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • The sessions will comprise well illustrated presentations with the opportunity for discussion and questions, one session on hieroglyphs will include some individual work.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Ongoing, informal, no tests or exams

What else do I need to know?

  • A pen and paper is recommended, and a pen or pencil will be essential for the session on hieroglyphs.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • If time allows reading any introductory book will be helpful e.g. Salima Ikram's An Introduction to Ancient Egypt
