The workshop will explore how to prepare for a variety of audiences and functions. Understand the key principles and approaches to delivering successful, engaging and appropriately humorous speeches for a range of social occasions.

Course aim

An in depth and participative introduction to the key principles of successful public speaking for social occasions.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • The workshop is for anybody that wants to explore how to improve speaking in public on social occasions.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the key elements of a good speech and how to make one
  • Feel more confident in ability to deliver a good speech
  • Have an understanding of reasons for nerves / anxiety prior to public speaking and how to overcome this.
  • Present a short speech to other participants with developmental feedback
  • Had some fun!

How will I be taught?

  • The majority of the workshop will be active, practical, trying out in pairs and individually what works and what doesn't. Participants will work on developing micro speeches supported by the tutor and each other.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • All practical work , trying out what works , preparing micro speeches will get developmental feedback from tutor and other participants.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • It would be useful , prior to the course, to reflect upon speeches that participants have personally experienced and /or delivered with a view to beginning to tease out what works and why.
