Lipreading and Managing Hearing Loss

Learn to recognise and practice lipshapes and to spot other visual clues to support your hearing. Improve confidence and the ability to communicate and take part in social activities . This is a fun and friendly way to practice lipreading and other communication skills and coping strategies with others experiencing the same difficulties.

Course aim

To provide a safe space to explore and practice the concept of lipreading as an aid to communication, as well as managing hearing loss, to improve confidence and enhance quality of life for people loosing their hearing.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is best suited to those who have acquired hearing loss (loosing their hearing).

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Build self confidence to communicate in social situations
  • Use techniques and strategies to support my hearing loss
  • Develop lipreading, listening, fingerspelling and other communication skills
  • Identify and access information about hearing loss, hearing aids and environmental aids

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

  • Nothing else is needed

  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2018
