World Poetry Day Taster - How to read Poetry and Why

What is all the fuss about poetry? What is the point of it? Why bother with it? How do we make sense of it? Can poetry help me to live my life? This workshop, to celebrate World Poetry Day 2019, is for those who want to discover or re-discover the pleasures of reading classic poems in a relaxed, informed and supportive environment.

Course aim

To develop confidence in understanding and appreciation of some of our greatest poems, in celebration of World Poetry Day, 2019.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Articulate an assured personal response to classic poems.
  • Identify key features of literary and poetic language.
  • Appreciate the expressive nature of poetry.
  • Develop an understanding of the significance of contextual factors in the creation of poetic meaning.
  • Appraise a poet's intentions with confidence.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
