ICT for Beginners and Improvers

Basic IT course covering a range of commonly used computer skills. Students will learn or improve their internet search skills, use of email and how to stay safe online, as well as how to create a range of documents (i.e. letters, flyers, cards, spreadsheets and presentations) and how to upload and edit photos. Exact topics to be decided as a group and there will be some time to focus on individual goals as needed.

Course aim

Introduce learners to a range of essential computer skills including: using office software to create various documents, photo editing as well as using email, the internet and online safety.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use email to send and receive attachments and photographs
  • Use the internet to search for information and images to use within your documents
  • Use Microsoft Office or Google Docs to create at least 3 different types of document (i.e. letter, newsletter, flyer, C.V., birthday card, business card)
  • Upload and edit photos using simple image editing software
  • Use PowerPoint or Google Slides to create a presentation about a hobby or interest to show to the group

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Your work and handouts will be saved to your google drive (cloud storage online) so you'll be able to access these outside the class and continue working anywhere with internet access.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Laptops are provided to use in the class but students are also permitted to bring in their own devices if wished (i.e. laptop, tablet or smart phone).

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
