Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction

The MBSR course offers both formal and informal mindfulness practices for students to learn and engage in, as well as theory and exercises to help identify particular stress triggers and the option to introduce more helpful responses instead. Studies have shown attendance at this course to help with issues such as anxiety, pain, confidence levels and may help prevent burn out.

Course aim

For those who would like to be able to handle the stress in their lives more effectively with greater support for their health and well being, through working with the formal and informal mindfulness practices presented.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Know and understand the definition of Mindfulness as set out by the creator of the course, Jon Kabat-Zinn
  • Have learned and experienced 4 formal mindfulness practices
  • Have learned and experienced 4 informal mindfulness practices
  • Identify potentially stressful situations and corresponding exercises to help
  • Identify a method to enable me to be less reactive in difficult situations

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • The course is most effective if the student engages with the practice homework regularly. Ideally this is 30 minutes, 5 times per week.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You may want to wear comfortable clothing, and bring a yoga mat or blanket, especially for the first 2 sessions.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
