Fitness: Tai Chi and Health Qigong

Learning Tai Chi and Health Qigong routines consisting of low impact movements combining softness with strength, stretching and toning muscles and practicing these routines improves suppleness, flexibility and coordination. This can improve relaxation, balance and posture as well as overall wellbeing.

Course aim

Improve all round fitness and wellbeing through practice of Tai Chi and Health Qigong routines.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate 3 Tai Chi stances - Bow Stance, T Step and Empty Stance (Beginners) Demonstrate flow of movements when performing Tai Chi (Improvers)
  • Demonstrate coordination of arms and legs when performing Tai Chi (Beginners) Demonstrate coordination of movements and smooth transitions when performing Tai Chi (Improvers)
  • Demonstrate an awareness of some Tai Chi principles (Beginners) Demonstrate some Tai Chi principles (Improvers)
  • Perform Health Qigong routines using correct postures (Beginners) Perform Health Qigong routines using correct techniques (Improvers)

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Music accompanies each routine which helps to regulate timing and aids recall of movements.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • Tutor observation and feedback Student feedback Practice in small groups

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • Wear flat comfortable shoes and loose clothing You may wish to bring a drink with you

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • A selection of books is available on Amazon (Yang style Tai Chi) British Health Qigong Federation website has stills of Qigong routines British Health Qigong Association and Deyin websites have videos to watch
