Art & Architecture of Cities – Venice and the Veneto

Ref: C3529758

The course will look at the development of art and architecture in Venice and the surrounding towns and cities of the Veneto. It will explore the origins of Venice, the impact of Byzantine art on its earliest buildings, particularly St Mark's Basilica. The Medieval period will focus on Giotto's Arena Chapel at Padua, and its impact on other artists in the Veneto. The influence of Gothic art will focus on the Ducal Palace and other Palazzi in Venice. The unique political structure of Venice and its position at the crossroads of the Christian West and Byzantine East, will also be crucial to understanding the difference between Venice compared to other cities in Italy. In painting the course will look at the development of a distinctively Venetian School, focusing on colour, particularly in the work of artists such as Giovanni Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Veronese and Tintoretto. The Venice BIennale will bring the course up to its conclusion in the present day.
