Calligraphy for Beginners and Improvers

A wonderful opportunity to be introduced to the graceful style of Modern Calligraphy which is based on the historic script of Copperplate. This informal hand writing style is a great way to learn traditional methods. All tools and materials provided.

Course aim

To offer an introduction to Modern Calligraphy including tools and materials, which is a great style to learn for the beginner. With a view to developing your own hand lettering.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Experience is not necessary. A keen interest to learn the style is all that is required.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Select appropriate materials for writing Modern Calligraphy
  • Construct upper & lower case letterforms in Modern Calligraphy
  • Write upper & lower case using suitable ligatures
  • Analyse the characteristics and construct basic flourishes
  • Continue to develop my own personal style

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • I will monitor and assess students letter forms through a combination of exercises, worksheets and demonstrations.

What else do I need to know?

  • Comfortable clothing and a good pair of glasses (if needed). We will be sat down for the most part of the course. Reference books and work sheets will be provided. Tools and materials will be available to buy if needed.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • The initial session will cover tools and materials which we will discuss including options and availabilty from local shops and websites.
