This course will look at the beliefs and practices of the world’s fastest growing religion. Why is the Prophet Muhammad known as 'The Seal of the Prophets?' Is the Qur'an the only source of authority? Why is modesty in dress and living a halal lifestyle so important? What is the role of women in Islam? To discover the answers to these questions and explore many more areas of this Abrahamic faith; join us for an exploration into Islam.

Course aim

This course will look at the beliefs and practices of the world’s fastest growing religion. Who was the Prophet Muhammad? Is the Qur'an the only source of authority? Why is modesty so important? What is the role of women in Islam?

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explore the history of Islam and the importance of the Qur'an, Hadith, Sunnah and Shari'a.
  • Explore the concept of the Ummah and the importance of family life
  • Be aware of the six articles of faith and the five pillars of Islam
  • Explore the history and differences between Sunni and Shi'a Muslims
  • Have some understanding of the role of women in Islam

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • just bring paper and pen
