An illustrated lecture describing the life of Peter Blundell, a fabulously rich Tiverton merchant - how he came by his fortune, and how he disposed of it through his will - giving an account of his plans for a school in the town, a foundation which still thrives today.

Course aim

To give an outline of the life of Peter Blundell and the bequests made in his will, especially the establishment of Blundell's School

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • understand early education, and who received it
  • learn about a famous Tiverton merchant
  • understand how wealth was disposed of in the 16th century
  • give an account of the social concerns of the time
  • better understand the mercantile life of a town like Tiverton

How will I be taught?

  • offer the students a guided tour of Blundell's School

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
