History - Cornish Crosses - Understanding the evidence

In Cornwall there are over six hundred medieval stone crosses and fragments from the late ninth century through to the Reformation. Join us on this fascinating course to find out more about their age, original function, decoration and context.

Course aim

This course aims to introduce students to the various types of stone cross and their place at Church sites and throughout the Cornish Landscape.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the different types of Cornish cross
  • State the various reasons why crosses were set up
  • Name and appreciate the many forms of ornament and decoration on the monuments
  • List the chronology of these crosses
  • Recognise the need for legal protection, repair and restoration

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • The student will need to bring a notebook, pencil and pen.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • There is no prior reading required Preston-Jones & Okasha, Early Cornish Sculpture 2013 Langdon AG, Old Cornish Crosses 1896 Langdon A, Stone Crosses in Cornwall Series 1992-2005 A full reading list will be provided at the first session.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
  • It will also inform and enhance walks in Cornwall and visits to parish churches.
