Course aim

This activity aims to explore aspects of the history and architecture of Truro's quays and Lemon Street through the work of architectural historian, Pevsner, and consider changing perceptions of townscapes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • Everyone is welcome to join this course - no prior knowledge or experience is required. it should be of interest to those who want to know more about the local townscape and the work of Pevsner.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify and discuss 5 features from Pevsner's Perambulations
  • Select one building that Pevsner didn't include and discuss it
  • Compare and contrast one building on the walk with Pevsner's written description
  • Explain the benefits and limitations of Pevsner's Perambulations with reference to one building or example

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views and work with the group and to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Verbal feedback and contributions to group discussions will support progression and inform students of progress being made.

What else do I need to know?

  • The course involves being outside so you should equip yourself with suitable footwear and clothing suitable for the forecasted weather. Refreshments should be packed, or purchased during the visit.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • An extract of Pevsner will be supplied to you as part of the course. However, you may wish to obtain a copy of his guide if you so wish - Peter Beacham and Nicolas Pevsner 'Cornwall' (Yale UP, 2012 or 2017 corrected editions)
