General art and craft course for learners with support needs. There will be a wide range of techniques covered with a focus on developing confidence through creativity.

Course aim

To introduce learners to a range of arts and crafts and encourage experimentation with new materials and techniques. This course also aims to develop social interaction skills by taking part in group activities/discussion.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • You will need to talk to a member of staff and do a short activity to make sure the course is right for you. For more information and to book an appointment please call 0300 303 3464
  • Suitable for anyone with a support need who would benefit from being in a supportive environment where they are able to progress at their own pace. i.e. those with a mental health issue, learning disability or other health issue.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use a range of drawing materials
  • Use a range of painting techniques
  • Create collage / mixed media work using a range of materials (ie; paper, fabric, wool, ribbon, sequins, feathers)
  • Produce work using at least 1 of the following techniques: Print-making, Textiles or 3-D
  • Show and discuss your work with the rest of the group

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Aprons are provided but you may also wish to wear old clothes as art can be messy and involves moving around the room to collect materials, equipment etc.
