Art & Architecture of Cities - Rome

The course will look at the origins and development of art and architecture in Ancient Rome, exploring the impact of Ancient Egyptian art, the Minoans, Ancient Greece and Etruscan art. The development of Early Christian and Byzantine art will also be examined in great detail. Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque Rome opens up studies into the work of named artists and architects, such as Pietro Cavallini, Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo, Bernini, Claude Lorraine, Poussin and in the 20th century, the Futurists and the Arte Povera movement.

Course aim

This course will give an overview of the art and architecture of Rome, from its ancient past to the present, which could be used as a guide to the city.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the origins of the architectural and artistic styles seen in Roman.
  • Understand how the socio-political structures and religious beliefs affected art and architecture at different periods in the history of Rome.
  • Understand the key characteristics of the different styles of art and architecture that developed in Rome
  • Understand the impact of climatic and geographical factors on the development of Roman art and architecture.

How will I be taught?

  • Each session will consist of a slideshow designed to provoke question and answer sessions and discussions.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
