Beginners' Sketching

This is a short introductory course into drawing and mark making. We will be working with graphite pencils of different grades and coloured pencils on paper. Through out the first few weeks we will explore using crosshatch, line and tonal markings. Moving on to pattern and line making and drawing basic shapes. This course is open to beginners and improvers. We will be looking at improving observation skills and the possibilities of using mark making to show variations in texture and pattern.

Course aim

To provide a brief introduction to drawing and mark making. We will explore pattern and texture and the drawing of basic shapes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • use my observation skills when sketching.
  • list 3 different grades (classification) of pencil.
  • use coloured pencils to create a simple picture.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
