Introduction to Healthy Cooking is a short course designed to get learners cooking from scratch whilst watching what they eat. We look at reducing salt, fat and sugar whilst keeping an eye on the food budget too.

Course aim

Introduction to Healthy Eating is a 5 week course where learners are introduced to a range of recipes that are popular yet contain reduced fat, salt and sugar. Learners are taught to cook from scratch.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Learn how to flavour food with various spices including cumin and turmeric
  • understand the difference between healthier low fat protein and the popular high fat alternatives we use.
  • Cook a curry from scratch
  • Learn how the learner can make a Pizza in 30 minutes from scratch (including dough)
  • Learn how to make two meals from one recipe.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Ingredients such as proteins (meats) and fresh vegetables and herbs are not provided by the WEA for cookery courses. A list of what is required for each session is available from the venue.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • A 10 week follow on Cookery Course at this venue is scheduled in September 2019 for learners wishing to continue their journey into learning about healthy cookery.
