Introduction to Tai Chi

This course is designed to help anyone who wants to improve their health and wellbeing making it possible to stay active. The exercises are gentle and can be carried out seated or standing. Participants can learn Tai Chi and Qigong exercises which can help improve posture , balance , coordination and general wellbeing. Learning about Tai Chi principles such as weight transference and situation awareness can also help in preventing falls.

Course aim

To give an introduction to Tai Chi and Qigong and to practice the exercise safely . To improve health and fitness ,aid balance and coordination,reduce the risk of falls. To have fun learning something new!

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Practice warm-up and cool down exercise.
  • Perform 3 Tai Chi or Qi gong exercises.
  • Follow safety guidelines

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students can practice some of the movements at home if they want to or research some of the topics , this is optional .

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Comfortable loose clothing . Flat shoes or trainers .

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
