First Steps to ESOL

First steps to ESOL is a beginners course where students may or may not have any previous experience of learning English as an additional language. You will learn in a friendly and supportive environment where the tutor will provide you with the confidence and motivation to learn further. You will learn vocabulary to help you in your everyday life in the UK and how to use this vocabulary in meaningful language.

Course aim

This course is for beginners whose English language is limited and who want to improve their skills at a basic level. These include English speaking , listening, reading and writing.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • You will need to talk to a member of staff and do a short activity to make sure the course is right for you. For more information and to book an appointment please call 0300 303 3464
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Engage in basic English speaking across a range of contexts e.g. describing your home and your health.
  • Listen and reply to other people using basic English sentences in social situations as well as talking to professionals such as healthcare staff and school teachers.
  • Read simple signs and sentences to do with being out and about such as travelling by public transport.
  • Write basic information clearly so that it can be understood, such as personal information on forms.
  • Grow in confidence in English speaking, giving and receiving support from others on the course.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • At the first class the tutor will discuss things you will need such as a pen, paper and a folder to keep your work in.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
