Exploring Technical Techniques in Sewing

This course is ideal for people that want to advance their sewing skills and learn techniques to extend their accuracy and repertoire of garment construction. Throughout the course you will explore technical sewing techniques that add the professional touches to your finished garment. You will achieve this by understanding how and where to under stitch, clip curves, finish a variety of seam appropriately, look at ways to apply bias binding, insert zips and how to press your garment etc. This is teacher lead throughout, with input weekly from learner to express what their needs are, so the course is adapted and relevant to the learning process.

Course aim

A dressmaking class which explores different technical sewing techniques each week, which can be applied to your garment or soft furnishing project to give a professional finish

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate confidence on the sewing machine
  • Construct a variety of samples that demonstrate each technical sewing technique explored to use for further reference
  • Prepare or add to detailed step by step instructions for each technical technique explored
  • Select a variety of different machine stitches, needles and machine feet appropriate to the construction technique required

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Bring fabric and your sewing kit to consist of pins, thread, hand and sewing needles, fabric scissors, tape measure, seam ripper, tailors chalk etc. A few sewing machines are provided but you are welcome to bring our own.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
