Journey Into The World of Poetry

Ref: C3126830

This free day at The Wolverhampton Arena includes a series of poetry writing workshops with talented local poets in the morning themed around A Journey. If you want to build your confidence in writing and performing poetry or just want to get back into creative writing then this should be just for you. The afternoon will include accessible readings from local poets, including Rob Francis and Kuli Kohli and a chance to perform your own work before a friendly audience. Participants will benefit from gentle and supportive advice and if you’ve never performed before you might surprise yourself.

Course aim

A selection of lively poetry activities and workshops for would-be poets and performers to celebrate World Poetry Day.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for anyone who has a genuine enthusiasm for writing and/ or performing poetry. Enthusiasm is the key word. You may not have written anything before, or for a while, but if you want to give it a go then come along.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • tackle writing a poem with more confidence
  • say that you've read/ performed a poem in public
  • recognise opportunities to improve my writing/ performing skills
  • have a good idea of where live literature events happen locally

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • It is a one-day course so no work will be expected by way of preparation or as follow-up.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be sensible to bring a note book and pen or a laptop if you prefer.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • A genuine enthusiasm for poetry and live performance are the two key things. Most successful poets read a lot so if you don't now might be the time to start.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • There will be a 6-week WEA course in the summer term on 'Writing for Performance' in Wolverhampton which will include sessions on poetry, storytelling and writing drama.
