This course will develop women’s study skills and confidence exploring their transferable skills. They will develop communication skills in speaking and listening, carry out some research, and undertake basic computer work and simple maths. Students will practise and discuss reading, note taking, essay writing and report writing. There will be some home study and written tasks as well as a two day residential weekend. This is a women only course, taught by women.

Course aim

The course aims to develop women’s confidence and study skills for those embarking for the first time or returning to adult education. Women will explore the transferable skills they have developed that would be relevant for the workplace.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is open to Unison members only
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre
  • A basic understanding of English is required, though students can participate at their own level This course is suitable for women wanting to enter into adult education for the first time or to return to education

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss women’s experiences
  • Develop note-taking and comprehension skills
  • Reflect on own experiences as a woman
  • Write about own experiences
  • Write with confidence in a number of styles

How will I be taught?

  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You will need to attend an overnight weekend residential. The costs of this will be paid by Unison.
