Patchwork & Quilting

This course is ideal for people that want to continue to build on their knowledge of patchwork and machine quilting. With guidance from your tutor you will decide on a patchwork project of your choice, put your ideas to paper and map out how to construct your design ideas. You will continue to gain confidence of techniques required to construct accurate patchwork and quilting with a professional finish. When appropriate, learners will be teacher lead through demonstrations and sampling. Learners will spend time within each session working on their own project applying their knowledge.

Course aim

To create a patchwork product of your choice by building on prior patchwork and quilting skills and knowledge.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Confidently select suitable fabrics and colour schemes that complement each other
  • Sketch and map out design ideas for patchwork projects
  • Demonstrate accurate cutting with a cutting mat and rotary cutter
  • Assemble a patchwork project, showing precision, by using a 1/4inch seams throughout

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring coordinating fabrics, basic sewing equipment, thread, sewing needles, fabric and paper scissors, seam ripper. Also bring patchwork equipment - cutting mat, rotary cutter, patchwork ruler - if you have them. Sewing machines provided, but you are welcome to bring your own.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
