With guidance from your tutor you will learn how to read a paper pattern to enable you to make a garment or item of soft furnishing that will be unique to you. You will gain confidence on the sewing machine and explore a range of hand and machine stitches and technical techniques to help you achieve your sewing challenge.
Course aim
Learn how to sew, or continue to improve on your sewing skills, with the aim of creating a unique garment or an item of soft furnishing of your choice.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- No skills or experience needed
- This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Demonstrate how to accurately translate instructions from a paper pattern
- Demonstrate a high level of confidence on the sewing machine
- Select and demonstrate a variety of new construction techniques relevant to your chosen project
- Assemble a unique garment or item of soft furnishing
How will I be taught?
- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
- You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
- You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
- You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
What else do I need to know?
- Please bring a paper pattern and fabric/s for your sewing project, basic sewing equipment, thread, hand and machines needles, fabric and paper scissors and seam ripper. Sewing machines provided, but you are welcome to bring your own.
Pre-course work, reading and information sources
- No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
