Improving your Computer Skills

You will build on your existing skills using Word to learn about some features you can use to add more interest and detail to your documents. You will learn about making text stand out more using font styles and Word Art. You will learn how to insert shapes and pictures to give your document more visual impact. You will practice sending, replying to and forwarding emails, opening attachments you receive and adding attachments to emails you send. You will use the Internet to search for information you want, and learn about some ways to keep yourself safe online. We will look at online shopping and booking tickets for events/travel.

Course aim

This course is for people who have some experience using computers. You will improve your knowledge of Word, using email and searching using the Internet.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To insert, crop and adjust pictures in a Word document
  • To insert and personalise shapes (change size, colour) in a Word document
  • To send, reply to and forward emails
  • To add, open and save email attachments
  • To use the Internet safely to find information and make transactions

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Official document(s) showing the correct spelling of your name, address and date of birth.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

Enrolment Conditions

As a registered charity, and to meet our funders’ requirements, we need to check a few things with you before you book. Please could we ask that you check the list below to ensure you meet our basic criteria:

  • You are paying the standard fee (with a credit or debit card) or you are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • You have a valid email address so that you can receive confirmation of your booking
  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2018
